(CBS/KMOX) ST. LOUIS - A Missouri truck driver convicted of killing his live-in girlfriend and chopping her to pieces is to be sentenced Monday in Franklin County.
According to CBS St. Louis, the jury that convicted 37-year-old Vernell Loggins in 25-year-old Stephanie Fields' slaying recommended that he receive the death penalty.
Fields was reportedly stabbed over 25 times. At the crime scene blood was splattered so high, some was found on the ceiling fan.
After killing Fields, he went shopping at Walmart where he was recorded on surveillance video picking up carpet cleaner and a 64-gallon plastic trash can, reports CBS St. Louis. Loggins reportedly used the items to dispose of Fields' headless body outside the Monroe Woods apartment complex where the couple lived.
Her head was later found in the Meramec River, CBS St. Louis reports.
