(CBS/AP) CONROE, Texas - Verna McClain, the Texas nurse accused of killing a young mother and abducting her 3-day-old boy, was set to make a court appearance Thursday before a judge in Conroe.
McClain faces a capital murder charge and a potential death sentence in the slaying of 28-year-old Kala Marie Golden. She is accused of shooting Golden multiple times Tuesday in the parking lot of Northwoods Pediatric Center in Spring, Texas which is 20 miles north of Houston. She then allegedly sped away with the dying mother's 3-day-old son Keegan Schuchardt.
The newborn was found later Tuesday evening at the home of McClain's sister.
The 30-year-old nurse had recently suffered a miscarriage, according to authorities. Officials in Montgomery County say McClain had told her fiance' she had given birth to his child. The sheriff's office said Wednesday that McClain tried to represent Keegan as her own child. Her sister allegedly told authorities that McClain had plans to "do the adoption" after taking Keegan.
Montgomery County Sheriff's Detective John Schmitt said McClain, who authorities say has admitted shooting Golden and stealing the baby, does "appear remorseful for what happened."
The kidnapped baby has been returned to his family, according to his father, Keith Schuchardt, who said he had been married to Kala Golden for three years.
Schuchardt, who also has a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, said officials were initially concerned about his criminal record, which includes felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance and burglary of a coin-operated machine.
Gwen Carter, a spokeswoman for Texas' Department of Family and Protective Services, said Schuchardt could see his children as often as he wanted while authorities worked on the case.
McClain is a vocational nurse who has three children. She is estranged from the children's father.
