New report ranks the best hospitals in America

U.S. News & World Report is out with its annual rankings of the best hospitals in America.

Massachusetts General Hospital, which was No. 2 last year, reclaimed the top spot on the Honor Roll, which features hospitals that score near the top in at least six specialties. University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston topped the list for cancer care and the Cleveland Clinic ranked No. 1 in cardiology & heart surgery. The Mayo Clinic was rated best in numerous categories including gastroenterology; neurology and neurosurgery; diabetes and endocrinology; gynecology; and geriatrics. Hospital for Special Surgery in New York ranked No. 1 in orthopedics.

The list is designed to help patients with life-threatening or rare conditions identify the best facility for treatment.

To make the list, U.S. News includes data for nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide and results from more than 140,000 physician surveys. U.S. News considered a number of factors including death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation. One hundred thirty seven hospitals nationwide were ranked in a specialty and the Honor Roll features 15 Best Hospitals.

The top five hospitals on the Honor Roll are:

1. Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston)

2. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota)

3. (tie) Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore)

3. (tie) UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles)

5. Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, Ohio)
