Upstate New York man charged with fatally stabbing woman

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - Authorities have charged a 31-year-old man in the stabbing death of a woman he lived with in upstate New York.

The Post-Standard reports that Stephen Schumejda has been arrested on a second-degree murder charge in the death of 44-year-old Amy Bradstreet in Cazenovia. The suspect is also facing charges of first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

State Trooper Jack Keller told the paper Bradstreet died as a result of her wounds.

Police received a call shortly before 9 a.m. Monday about a domestic incident at a home on East Lake Road near Cazenovia Lake, about 17 miles southeast of Syracuse.

The paper reports Cazenovia Village Police officers met the suspect at some point Sunday night after receiving calls that he was drunk and causing disturbances at either a party of a bar, said Keller. When Schumejda was arrested, he had a black eye, though Keller said it could have been the result of a fall earlier in the night.

Keller said neighbors told police they heard an argument at the home where the victim was found around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Schumejda was jailed on $250,000 bail.

Police are waiting on the results of the victim's autopsy Tuesday before releasing any more information, according to the Post-Standard.
