Unlocking a Future: Programs inside and outside prison
(CBS News) Most Americans have little familiarity with what really goes on behind prison walls and the efforts to change the troubled patterns of behavior. Crimesider has produced this eight-part series, looking at some of the successful programs inside a few of the country's toughest prisons changing inmates' lives.
These stories examine unique programs such as inmates caring for other dying inmates, taking care of animals and expressing themselves through the arts. The programs show both the inmates themselves and those around them a very different side of their humanity.
"Unlocking a Future" offers a rare and intimate glimpse inside three New York State prisons, and at the lives of inmates still incarcerated, and two who were released - including one exonerated of murder. The series also profiles those working within the prison system to humanize life behind bars, providing hope for a better existence once they walk beyond those prison walls.
No one program has all the answers, but in our series, "Unlocking a Future," we think we have found a few.
