Two-Year Wait For 'Sex' On TV

"Sex and the City" is going on broadcast television, but fans of the bawdy HBO hit will have to wait two years to catch the toned-down reruns slated for syndication.

The broadcasting unit of Tribune Co. announced Wednesday that it acquired rights to the popular cable television series. The show will air on the company's 26 major-market stations six days a week, beginning in September 2005.

The show, which is in its final season on the cable network, stars Sarah Jessica Parker as New York-based columnist Carrie Bradshaw. It will be edited for nudity and other adult content.

Tribune's stations reach more than 80 percent of U.S. television households, according to the company's Web site.

Pat Mullen, president of Tribune Broadcasting, said the Emmy-award winning show would appeal to the younger demographic served by the company's Warner Bros. affiliates.

"Sex and the City has been one of the strongest half-hour comedies on television, and it is easily the best new comedy coming into the syndication marketplace," Mullen said.

A news release announcing the acquisition did not say how much Tribune Co. paid for syndication rights.
