Two reported in custody in L.I. pharmacy murders

(CBS/WCBS) BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. - There appears to be a break in the execution-style killings of four people inside a Long Island pharmacy, on the same day that grieving friends and family members will begin saying goodbye to the victims.

Police blocked off an area of Pitch Pine Place in Medford, N.Y. where sources told CBS station WCBS that two men were led away in handcuffs earlier Wednesday.

One of the people in custody is 33-year-old David Laffer. There's a report the second person in custody is Laffer's wife Melinda, according to WCBS.

A gunman killed 45-year-old pharmacist Raymond Ferguson, 17-year-old employee Jennifer Mejia, and customers 71-year-old Bryon Sheffield and 33-year-old Jamie Taccetta at Haven Pharmacy Drugs in Medford Sunday, before picking up prescription drugs and calmly walking out, authorities say.

Mejia was supposed to attend her senior prom Wednesday night before graduating from Bellport High School in Brookhaven Thursday. Instead, her wake begins this afternoon.

Viewings will also be held for Ferguson Wednesday.

Taccetta's family, including her two daughters, visited the crime scene Tuesday. She was engaged, and her family will bury her in her wedding dress.

"It was so senseless he could have stole the drugs and left everybody alone, just threw them in the back. There was no reason to shoot them, no reason," Patricia Taccetta, Jamie's mother, told WCBS.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said Monday that the victims "offered no resistance" and "did not appear to provoke the assailant."
