Two New Orleans police officers shot during traffic stop, 1 suspect dead, 1 injured
(CBS/AP) NEW ORLEANS - Two New Orleans police officers are undergoing surgery after being shot during a traffic stop near City Park.
Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas says two suspects were also shot around 5:45 a.m. Thursday by the officers. One suspect died at the scene and the other was wounded.
Serpas says the officers were taken to a local hospital and immediately went into surgery.
According to CBS affiliate WWL, Dr. Norman McSwain, the trauma director at University Hospital, said one officer suffered a gunshot wound to his colon and the second officer was hit in the liver by a bullet. McSwain said both officers are in stable condition.
Police said the second suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries and was receiving treatment at the hospital, WWL reports.
Terry Smith, an employee of a nearby fast food restaurant, identified the dead man as a co-worker. Smith was angry at police, expressing doubt that the young man was involved in a crime.
