TSA thwarts identity thieves in Fla., report says

(CBS) FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Bound for Baltimore, two men at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport caught the attention of TSA agents and were found in possession of documents and personal belongings of hundreds of people, in a far-reaching case of identity fraud, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office, CBS Miami reported.

Detective Mitchell Gordon reportedly showed the station evidence including a book, computers and loose papers filled with personal information that he says proves Godfrey Teekah and Phillip Collins committed identity theft.

Gordon says that on Thursday, Feb. 22, TSA agents discovered several debit cards in Teekah's wallet that were in other people's names, as well as two laptop computers in Teekah's backpack.

"If they didn't see something suspicious in their behavior we wouldn't have never apprehended these people and they would have been up in Baltimore compromising hundreds of people's information," he told CBS Miami.

Gordon says the men told investigators they had all the information because they were doing people's taxes.

"I don't think this is how you do somebody's taxes - carry their personal information around," Gordon said.

Gordon says the men also had thousands in cash on them and the arrest report states the men eventually admitted using people's personal information to commit tax return fraud.

Both men are out of jail on bond on a charge of fraudulent use of personal identification information.

"Your information is everywhere," Gordon told CBS Miami. "The problem is, to pinpoint where your information was compromised is very difficult."
