Tropical Storm Fred weakening over open Atlantic

MIAMI - Tropical Storm Fred is moving farther away from the Cape Verde Islands and is expected to weaken.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday are near 65 mph.

Fred is centered about 225 miles northwest of the Cape Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest near 12 mph.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Hurricane Jimena remains a powerful Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds near 130 mph. Jimena is centered about 1,075 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west near 13 mph. CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB reported Tuesday that it is too early to tell what kind of impact Jimena will have on the Hawaiian islands.

Also in the Pacific, a tropical depression is expected to become a tropical storm later in the day. The depression has maximum sustained winds near 35 mph. It's centered about 745 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and is moving west-northwest near 8 mph.
