Trick-or-Treater, 12, killed by drunk driver, say Las Vegas police

(CBS/APKLAS) LAS VEGAS - A 12-year-old Las Vegas girl was killed by a drunk driver while trick-or-treating on Halloween, police said.

Faith Love, a seventh-grader, was trick-or-treating with friends when she was struck and killed by a car Monday night, CBS affiliate KLAS reported.

The 41-year-old driver, Justin Caramanica, was arrested on a felony drunken driving charge and is being held at the Clark County jail.

Rocquell Love says she hadn't planned on taking her daughter trick-or-treating Monday night. But she decided to let her daughter go out with her cousins and an aunt after the girl's 6-year-old brother got sick.

The girl was dressed as a Native American princess when she was allegedly struck by Caramanica's 2009 Mazda RX-8.

"Everybody is a bit in shock," neighbor Jack Pfatenhauer told KLAS.

A memorial marks the spot of the crash and serves as a reminder that Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for pedestrians.

"Here's a holiday specific to our children, they like to go out, they like to have fun, they're so many of them out in the neighborhoods and doing their trick-or-treating never thinking that they're going to lose their life because someone has chosen to drive under the influence," said Sandy Heverly with Stop DUI.

KLAS reported the posted speed limit in the neighborhood is 25 miles-per-hour. Police say Caramanica was speeding and under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs when he hit the girl.

Faith was taken to University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that she was already dead by the time her mother arrived at the hospital.

If convicted of felony DUI, Caramanica is facing a prison term of eight to 20 years.
