Tribeca 2013 closes with Jerry Lewis screening
The Tribeca Film Festival has ended on a royal note with Jerry Lewis showing up at the 30th anniversary restoration screening of "The King of Comedy."
- "The Rocket," "Kill Team" take top Tribeca honors
- Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal on what's in store for Tribeca 2013
Lewis' appearance at the closing night's festivities came as a bit of a surprise, given that Tribeca co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal initially told CBSNews.com that they did not expect Lewis to attend the screening Saturday.
The 87-year-old comedian-actor walked out to thunderous applause after the "The King of Comedy" screening at Tribeca, joining co-star De Niro and director Martin Scorsese.
Lewis answered questions about the making of the film and brought the audience to laughter with a tale about a guy he met on a subway train.
In the movie, Lewis plays a talk-show host kidnapped by a deranged comedian played by De Niro.
Actress Diahnne Abbott also starred in the film as Rita Keane. Abbott and De Niro were married in real life but divorced in 1988. Clearly there's no hard feelings though, as Abbott was also spotted at the Tribeca screening.
"'The King of Comedy' was the third film I had the privilege of working with Marty and Bobby...they were my teachers. They were my mentors. It's great," Abbott told CBSNews.com on the red carpet.
De Niro founded the festival with producers Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff as a way to rebuild the neighborhood where the World Trade Center fell in the 9/11 attacks. The film festival also places an emphasis on the restoration of classic films, such as "The King of Comedy."
