Trial starts for mother of missing Arizona baby Gabriel Johnson

KPHO-TV

(CBS/AP) PHOENIX- The trial of Elizabeth Johnson, the Arizona mother charged with criminal wrongdoing in the disappearance of her child Gabriel Johnson starts today, CBS affiliate KPHO reports.

Lawyers in the case were previously scheduled to make opening statements Wednesday, but attorneys will address jurors today.

Johnson plead not guilty to charges of kidnapping, custodial interference and attempted custodial inference in the December 2009 disappearance of her son, Gabriel.

Initially, she told the boy's father that she killed Gabriel and dumped him in a trash bin in San Antonio, TX. She later recanted her story and told police that she gave the baby to a couple at a park in the Texas city, but was unable to provide names.

Gabriel has never been found and police do not know whether he is alive or not.
