Top Chefs Make Food For The Gods
And then there were four. In the case of this season's Top Chef Masters its a Final Four of all male chefs after an interesting elimination in the round of five.
The Final five on Top Chef Masters kicked off with another Top Chef classic, name that ingredient. The chefs go head to head tasting a sauce and they have to name the components of the sauce. The one who names the most ingredients wins. (Editor's Note: This is a game I play with my kids, when I make a sauce and its very tough.)
The challenge gave some interesting insights into the final five chefs trying to become the master. Susan Feninger admits she hasn't made a classic sauce in more than 20 years and she feels its a competitive disadvantage.
Susser Lee went head to head with Marcus Samuelsson in the first round and commented on tasting styles. Rick Moonen went back to his saucier roots and bluffed Fenninger into pushing her limit and knocked her out.
Moonen won in round three besting Lee in a seafood sauce taste off.
For the elimination challenge, the chef's drew knives with the names of Greek Gods and Goddesses on them and were tasked with cooking a meal for the Gods. Chef Lee was a little behind, not having a cultural knowledge of Greek Literature.
The chefs are cooking for Dionysus the God of Wine (Chef Lee); Hades the God of Hellfire (Chef Moonen); Aphrodite The Goddess of Love (Chef Feninger); Ares the God of War (Chef Samuelsson); and Poseidon God of the Sea (Chef Waxman).
While waiting for the judges to render their decision, Chef Moonen admitted that the challenge was mentally tough and physically challenging. Inside at the critics table, Chef Lee's trouble understanding Dionysus, the God he was cooking for cost him some points. Rather than a pork loin with a Sauvignon Sauce the judges mused he would probably reach for a BBQ spare rib and beer.
Chef Moonen was the big winner getting 4.5 stars from each of the judges and the diners. On the losing end, Chef Feninger (winner of $32,500 for her charity) was voted out.
