Three Ways to Give a Good Interview

Looking for a new gig? Then you'll love Penelope Trunk's simple three-tip approach for putting your best foot forward in an interview.

Tip 1: Be interesting. As Penelope says, interviewers don't ask you questions because they really want to know the answers. They want to know how you'll respond. So give an answer that is thought-provoking and interesting, not just the right answer.

Tip 2: Be short. Think sound bites, not soliloquies. The world's attention span is limited, so get to your point right away. And keep in mind the effect long discourses have on Tip 1: the longer you ramble, the harder it is to keep someone's interest.

Tip 3: Be conversational. Ask questions back. It shows you find the interviewer interesting, and it's always better to have two interesting people in the room instead of just one. This also helps the conversation veer off-script and creates room for spontaneity and passion, which makes the discourse more engaging.
