1974
North Carolina State wins its first national title, 76-74, over Marquette at Greensboro, N.C. In the game, Marquette coach Al McGuire is whistled for a pair of technical fouls that result in 10 Wolfpack points and David Thompson's 21 points and seven rebounds are enough to help N.C. State beat the Warriors. Thompson wins the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
1972
UCLA wins its sixth straight NCAA championship, defeating Florida State, 81-76, at Los Angeles. UCLA sophomore Bill Walton scores 24 points and has 20 rebounds and Keith Wilkes adds 23 points for the Bruins. Walton earns the tourney's Most Outstanding Player honor.
1967
UCLA wins its third championship in four seasons with a 79-64 win over Dayton at Louisville. UCLA opens a 20-4 lead and pushes its advantage to 29 points. The Bruins end the season 30-0, only the fourth team ever to finish the season unbeaten. Lew Alcindor, with 20 points and 18 rebounds, earns his first of three NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player awards.
1961
Undefeated and defending champ Ohio State faces Cincinnati, winners of 21 straight, for the national crown at Kansas City. Ohio State's Bobby Knight ties the game in the final minutes and both teams have a chance to win before the game moves to overtime. The Bearcats prevail, 70-65, in the extra session to claim their first national title. Ohio State's Jerry Lucas is named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
1961
The National Consolation game is one of the wildest games in NCAA Tournament history as St. Joseph's defeats Utah, 127-120, in four overtimes. At the start of the first overtime, St. Joe's guard Bill Hoy scores into the wrong basket. Soon after the game, three St. Joseph's players are implicated in a gambling ring and St. Joe's has to forfeit the game. The 247 total points scored are the second most ever scored in a NCAA Tournament game.
1947
Holy Cross defeats Oklahoma, 58-47, to win the NCAA Championship at New York City. George Krafton is named the Most Outstanding Player, averaging 21 points-per-game, including 18 in the championship.
