"The Voice": Second week of battle rounds begins

The battle rounds continued Monday on "The Voice," with some steals and a few strong singers heading home.

Like last week, the contestants were helped by guest mentors Hillary Scott (Team Adam), Joel Madden (Team Shakira), Pharrell (Team Usher) and Sheryl Crow (Team Blake).

Here's what went down:

Team Usher:
Jessica Childress and Vido paired up to sing Bruno Mars' "Locked out of Heaven." Usher decided to keep Vido, who recently lost his mother to lung cancer.

Ryan Innes and Orlando Dixon also battled to "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. Usher decided to bring Innes to the knockout rounds, leaving Adam Levine to swoop in and steal Dixon. "I couldn't allow you to walk off the stage and go home right now," the Maroon 5 singer said. "You need to be here."

Team Shakira:
Shakira paired Luke Edgemon and Monique Abbadie on Lady Gaga's "You and I." The judges praised Edgemon's performance and it looked like he'd be named the winner, but she selected Abbadie, giving the guys the opportunity to steal the competitor. Usher and Blake Shelton both wanted Edgemon, and he picked Shelton.

Also from Shakira's team were Kris Thomas and C. Perkins, who battled to Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain." She chose Thomas to move forward, and Usher waited until Perkins had already left the stage to push his button for the steal. The coach explained that he did that on purpose: "He's reminded what it's like to not have it, so he'll never take it for granted."

Team Adam:
The duo Midas Whale battled Patrick Dodd on the Elvis hit "Burning Love." Dodd's raspy voice was so strong that Shelton said it sounded "like he gargles with broken glass." Levine chose Midas Whale, and no one tried to steal Dodd.

Team Blake:
Jacqui Sandell and Savannah Berry sang Little Big Town's "Little White Church" for their battle. The coach picked Berry, who was better suited for the country song. "I'm building a country army over here," he declared.

Tuesday's episode will mark the end of the battle rounds.
