"The Voice": Let the playoff games begin

The "Voice" live playoffs got under way Monday night with a host of winning performances. Adam Levine and Usher were the coaches to watch on Monday, as they guided their contestants' stripped-down performances. Shakira and Blake Shelton will follow suit on Tuesday night.

Team Adam:

Amber Carrington attempted Rihanna's "Stay," a solid rendition, according to Usher, who said, "The objective was for America was to become more familiar with your voice and have an intimate experience, and I think you did that."

Sarah Simmons took on "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, another impressive number of the night. Levine said, "You're one of the most incredible singers to listen to in my life."

Despite suffering from some vocal cord issues, Judith Hill powered through to sing "Feelin' Good" by Nina Simone, "You came out here and you took us to church," Usher said.

And with acoustic guitar in hand, Caroline Glaser performed "The A-Team" by Ed Sheeran. Usher, for one, was pleased, adding, "You get a vote simply for the dimples first!"

Team Usher:

Arkansas model Josiah Hawley sang Muse's "Starlight" -- apparently a good choice. And he even incorporated an electric guitar. "That performance was haunting and energetic," said Shelton.

Cathia made a bold move by attempting Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." Shakira said, "Taking a Whitney Houston song is like stepping on holy ground."

R&B hopeful Vedo sang Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" to much praise. "There's only thing that I don't like about you -- that you're not on my team," Levine said.

Michelle Chamuel performed Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" -- and it was a hit with the coaches."We all possess what we need to be our greatest selves...you made a connection they will never forget," Usher said.

"The Voice" returns Tuesday for a two-hour episode, with contenders from Team Blake and Team Shakira set to take the stage. It begins 8 p.m. ET on NBC. Coaches will have the chance to save one of their four team members this week; the top 12 will be unveiled on Wednesday.
