"The Voice": Competition heats up for Top 12
Things are heating up on "The Voice" -- and not just because the air conditioning in the show's Los Angeles studio gave out for the first half-hour of Monday's episode.
Usher even pulled off his shirt at one point to beat the heat, revealing a black tank top underneath and drawing screams from the audience.
Here's how the Top 12 fared:
Team Usher:
Vedo sang Michael Jackson's "Rock with You," after getting some tips from Usher's choreographer. "A lot of hard work goes into being a full entertainer who sings and dances," the coach said. "You paced yourself to make it through the entire song."
Josiah Hawley busted out a guitar and took on an acoustic cover of The Script's "The Man Who Can't Be Moved." Blake Shelton hailed this as his best performance yet, and Usher compared Hawley to a young Adam Levine.
Michelle Chamuel got off to a shaky start while singing Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend," but by the end of the song her personality came through and she earned praise from the judges.
Team Blake:
Holly Tucker took on Martina McBride's "Broken Wing." "Your confidence is coming along great," Shelton told her. "I know somewhere Martina McBride is going 'Oh my gosh.'"
Danielle Bradbery impressed the judges with her rendition of Carrie Underwood's "Wasted." "I never detect an ounce of nerves. You're like a 16-year-old Margaret Thatcher, a mini-Iron Lady," Shakira said. Levine puts it bluntly: "You're the one to beat."
The Swon Brothers paid tribute to the late George Jones by performing his hit "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?" "It was a beautiful rendition of that song. I forgot it was a competition. I was just enjoying it and having a good time," Levine said.
Team Shakira:
Garrett Gardner was tasked with singing the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way." He tried to give the pop tune a rock twist, but it didn't wow all of the judges. ""That wasn't my favorite choice. It was cool. I was a little thrown by it. I can't lie to you and tell you it was the best thing that you've done," Levine told him.
Sasha Allen delivered a rendition of Heart's "Alone" that Shakira called "heavenly." "I felt you kind of took us to church, that's what I thought," Usher added.
Kris Thomas used his falsetto to take on "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5. Usher didn't love the song choice, but praised him for taking a risk. Shakira, however, gushed: "You sang with so much sincerity, there was so much sweetness and honesty at the same time."
Team Adam:
Sarah Simmons took on Brandi Carlile's "The Story," which Shelton said showcased the "extremes" of her voice. Shakira added, "Your coach seems to know you very well because this song definitely suits your voice, your style."
Judith Hill accompanied herself on piano while singing Carole King's "You've Got a Friend." "It was beautiful, it was powerful, it was everything we've come to expect from Judith Hill every week," praised Shelton, while Levine called her "perhaps the most talented human being in this competition."
Amber Carrington performed Martina McBride's "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" in honor of her mother, who died of cancer. "As much as I hate to say it, Adam's got a star on his hands with you," Shelton told her. Usher said: "You are really an incredible vocalist. This is so beautiful that the world is being introduced to who you are."
The bottom two singers will be sent home during Tuesday's results episode.
