"The Simpsons" guest stars over the years

(CBS) "The Simpsons," the longest-running comedy series in U.S. TV history, has had almost as many famous guest stars at it has had episodes.

After almost 500 episodes - the show will celebrate the milestone on Sunday - the show has had guests that range from Rupert Murdoch to Britney Spears.

"The Simpsons" currently holds the Guinness World Record for most guest stars featured in a TV series. In the show's first 1990 season, it pulled in guest stars Kelsey Grammer, Penny Marshall and Albert Brooks. As the show continued to gain a reputation, the show began to pull not only famous actors, but also professional athletes and famous musicians.

Some of the shows guest stars over the years include Elizabeth Taylor, Ringo Starr, J.K Rowling, Meryl Streep and many more.

The show will celebrate its 500th episode on Sunday, Feb. 19 with a special guest appearance by controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
