The Scandal, One Year Later

It was one year ago this weekend that Kenneth Starr issued his report - but so much has happened since, it seems like ten years.

For me, it was one of those days I'll never forget: The first time as a reporter that I was truly at a loss for words.

I've always been one of those who believed there's not much that ought to be kept secret.

But as I was reading the report aloud on television I remember saying at one point, "well, Dan, maybe we shouldn't get into that."

But of course, we did, and a lot more.

In this one, I became acquainted with an odd assortment of hypocrites, eccentrics, hustlers and tarts, but it was hard to find a hero.

And I'll be frank, a year later I still don't know exactly what to make of it.

But I know this much: It diminished everyone and everything it touched - the Presidency, the Congress, the legal profession, politics, manners, and, yes, the media.

Reporters love a good story, but I hope you won't take away my press pass if I tell you I hope we don't run across another one like this, any time soon.
