The People Have Spoken

"Power to the people" is an old political chant. But Sunday night, it was the rule in Hollywood, where the People's Choice Awards were handed out, reports CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen.

No industry insiders are allowed to vote for the awards. Favorites are selected by a combination of polling and Internet voting. The awards ceremony was telecast live by CBS.

They smooched, they sparkled, and some dared to go bare. On a warm L.A. evening, the stars came out to celebrate the silver anniversary of the People's Choice Awards.

"I'm not singing tonight, so I can be a groupie and a fan," said Celine Dion, who won as Favorite Female Musical Performer. She plans to tour this year, then take a long break. "I want to have a normal life. I want to do some cooking, normal things like washing your own clothesÂ…[and] driving your own car. When I come back, maybe I'll do more music and some acting maybe. I'd love to give it a try."

Home Improvement's Tim Allen and Mad About You's Helen Hunt took top honors as favorite male and female television performers. Last year, Hunt won an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Golden Globe.

"Do I ever get sick of going to awards shows? It's hard to get sick when you keep winning. It's flattering!" said Hunt.

Sandra Bullock got the nod as favorite motion picture actress, while Tom Hanks accepted the favorite actor award.
"I am what I am," said Hanks. "I got a nice gig... By and large, I have nothing to complain about."

TV medical dramas proved the perfect prescription with the fans who recognized both E.R. and L.A. Doctors.
