The Millionaires Club

Lawmakers are well-positioned to weather the current economic downturn, according to a new analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics. 

Senators had a median net worth of about $1.7 million and House members of $684,000 last year, according to CRP analysis. On average, members saw their finances grow between 2006 and 2007, increasing 11 percent even as the economy started to slow.

Sixty-one percent of senators and 39 percent of House members are millionaires, worth far more than their $169,000 annual salary.

For the second year in a row, CRP awarded the title of wealthiest member to Rep, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), estimating her wealth at $387.4 million. Harman, a former law professor, is married to multimillionaire audio-equipment manufacturer and major philanthropist Sidney Harman.
