The Dream Must Wait

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) killed the Dream (Act). At least for now.

He announced last night that an immigration measure called the Dream Act would not be offered as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill, as Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) had hoped.

The measure became the target of anti-immigrant advocates, and some senators balked at attaching an immigration amendment to the defense bill.

Reid promised a vote on the program by mid-November.

The Dream Act would offer legal status to young illegal immigrants who came to the country at 15 years old or younger, remained here for at least five years and go on to serve in the military or attend college.
