NEW YORK (CBS) California engineer Alex Delgado got the axe Thursday night on "The Apprentice," when Octane, the men's team, fell short in New York ice-cream sales.

But in the winning-is-losing formula for this season's show, retooled for the recessionary era, Delgado, we are told, ends up with the job of his dreams in construction management.

Donald Trump fired Delgado primarily because he failed to defend himself aggressively enough and lacked both the gravitas or bravado the other members of his team displayed.

When project manager David Johnson said, "He's not even in our league, Alex responded, "I can be in your league" and then corrected himself to say , "I am in your league." But the damage was done, and Alex was gone.

The men's team was in the boardroom because they brought in almost 20 percent less than the women's team after selling ice cream from a pushcart on the streets of New York.

Both teams chose to work the crowd in Union Square. The men moved briefly to the West Village and then returned to Union Square the next day. The women were the first to see the need for a gimmick - they bought hot pink shirts and pink sequined flowers for their hair.

The men belatedly sent two team members to the costume store. They returned with striped vests and hats .

As is usual with "The Apprentice," the simpler the task, the harder the victory. This one was so deceptively simple that neither team gave much thought to a sales plan. Unfortunately, the men's team, which netted $1,500 , compared to $1,800 for the women, suffered the most for that failure.
