Tale Of The Tape
When Roger Clemens and his private investigators spoke with McNamee, they surreptitiously recorded the conversations. Clemens previously released portions of the tapes in a well-publicized press conference and has used them in a defamation suit against Brian McNamee.
Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.), following a recess, went after Clemens over the tapes, accusing him of releasing only selective portions. Davis points out that in the full recording, which the committee has, his investigators seem like they’re fishing for information when they asked if there was “any kind of paper trail documentation,” or if there were any witnesses.
Asked why they might have asked those questions, Clemens said, “I have no idea. I didn’t talk to my investigators. They went out and did the investigating.”
Davis also read from another question his investigators asked. “Hypothetically, if Roger Clemens said, ‘This is absolutely [bogus]. None of that ever happened,’ is there any doubt in your mind that what you told us today is the absolute truth?” McNamee had told the investigators that he had given Clemens steroids and human growth hormones.
“I’ve told you more truth than [I told] the federal government,” McNamee responded.
