(CBS) PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. - Suzanna Brown Simpson, a South Carolina mother, is accused of fatally shooting her two young children Tuesday in Pickens County, CBS affiliate WSPA reports.

According to the Pickens County Sheriff's Office, Simpson has been charged in the deaths of her 7-year-old daughter, Carly Ashelyn Simpson, and her 5-year-old son, Sawyer Russell Simpson. She is also accused of shooting and injuring her husband, Michael John Simpson, the station reports.

Investigators say both children died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to WSPA.

Both Suzanna and Michael Simpson remain in the hospital. She is listed in serious condition, while her husband is listed in critical condition.

It is unclear how Suzanna was injured, but police have said they found the bodies of the children only after a car registered to the family's address was involved in a car wreck in Pickens County around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The person involved in the wreck was taken to the hospital, the station says. It is unclear if that person was Suzanna.

The School District of Pickens County released a statement expressing sadness regarding the deaths of two of their students.

"...Both students were very special to the faculty, staff and children of our school. Carly had a beautiful smile that brightened everyone's day. Sawyer's excitement for learning was contagious. Our heartfelt condolences go to the family."

School officials have described Suzanna Simpson as a "model parent" who volunteered with the PTA.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
