Suspense Builds Awaiting Craig Announcement
Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) is expected to announce his resignation during a Saturday morning press conference following his arrest and subsequent guilty plea stemming from an incident in an airport bathroom in June, the Associated Press is reporting.
Citing three unnamed Republican officials in the state, the new agency is reporting what many have been speculating in Washington and Idaho for most of the day.
Craig is set to hold a press conference at 10:30 mountain to announce his plans as pressure to resign mounted throughout the week.
One senior Republican official, who has been closely monitoring the situation, said Friday he fully expected Craig to resign. Though his decision took several days, it was "pretty quick in Washington speak," the same official said.
"There was never any support for him," the official said. "Everybody pulled out the rug."
