Jail inmate accused of attempting to kill cop captured after 2nd escape this year

FLORENCE, Ala. — An Alabama inmate awaiting trial for the attempted murder of a police officer is back in custody after escaping for the second time this year. Authorities first learned of Christopher Kilpatrick's escape around 11 p.m. Saturday, when his parents called police and tipped them off to his escape, reports CBS affiliate WHNT.

Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Richard Richey told the station the 43-year-old Kilpatrick was trying to run from police in Macon County, Tennessee when he crashed the vehicle he was driving into another vehicle. The person driving the other vehicle is now in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

It is not clear what charges Kilpatrick will face in connection with the crash.

Kilpatrick had previously escaped the the Lauderdale County Detention Center on April 8, and was taken into custody a week later following a standoff.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said Kilpatrick escaped using the same method as in April, and cited "faulty design on the jail." Richey said overcrowding and the fact that the jail is old are to blame for the escape.

Kilpatrick was originally indicted in December on multiple charges in connection with an August 2016 incident in which he was shot by Florence Detective Michael Price. Price said he was trying to apprehend Kilpatrick, who had walked off a work-release detail, when Kilpatrick allegedly pointed a stolen gun at him, reports AL.com. Kilpatrick was shot in the abdomen and later charged with attempting to murder Price.

Kilpatrick was indicted on additional charges after his first escape.
