Superinjuction or not, Ryan Giggs is social media's worst kept secret
(CBS/What's Trending) - The biggest sports story of the week still has to be the Premier League footballer who is trying to sue pretty much everyone he can, including Twitter.
This all started when it came to light that an "unnamed" soccer player (if you don't actually know his name, you must have been in a coma for the last week) embarked on an affair with previous U.K. Big Brother contestant, Imogen Thomas, in what the Guardian called "the best known affair since since Bill Clinton's dalliance with a White House intern." The soccer star had asked for legal protection to prevent the
press from revealing his name in the tabloids regarding his affair, but
someone on Twitter spilled the details. Now, Ryan Giggs -- yes I said it, but so did the U.K. parliament and the press -- is now suing Twitter for preventing to protect a judge-issued superinjunction to protect his identity.
Though everyone was trying to keep his name a secret this time around, the cat came well and truly out of the bag when Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming named the premiership player as Ryan Giggs during a Parliament session which was broadcast live on BBC television. Hemming used parliamentary privilege to break the court order. Parliamentary privilege protects MPs and peers from prosecution for statements made in the House of Commons or House of Lords. This came after earlier the High Court again ruled that the injunction should not be lifted.
However don't expect the story to end there, not only did he have a Super Injunction ratified by UK courts to stop any press or media around the world disclosing his name, but he has now started proceedings against Twitter to disclose the users behind the @SuperInjuction account, which first connected him to the story on a mass level and no longer exists, in essence retracting the tweets. It's unclear what might happen here, even though Twitter is based in the U.S. Giggs pretty much stands no chance against the superpower themselves, but the actual people behind the account are UK based, and are rumored to be well-known journalists.
Ultimately, this could be a note to future celebs. If Ryan Giggs let this affair come out and admitted it, we would have all forgotten about his indiscretions and hardly anyone would know. Instead he has become one of the most famous people in the world of the web and social media.
