Sunglasses Have It Made In The Shade

Sunglasses are no longer just something you slip on when you slip into the driver's seat — they're a hot fashion accessory. Toby Tucker Peters of InStyle magazine came to The Early Show to show off the hottest styles for this summer.

But, as Peters pointed out, it's no longer necessary to settle on just one perfect pair.

"People have wardrobes of sunglasses," she told The Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm. "It's not just one pair you wear to the beach. It's things that you wear inside, outside. Things you wear during the day and things you wear during the night. It's a whole wardrobe now."

While the celeb magazines always show stars wearing gigantic sunglasses, the new look is slightly smaller. "It's a little pared down. It's squared off a bit. It's not covering your whole face," explained Peters, who added, "They're still very big."

Not everyone can wear the giant glasses — people who have small faces, for instance, should steer clear of them, according to Peters, and go for the "pared-down" version.

And if you're going to wear the giant glasses, stay away from wearing big jewelry at the same time. "If you have big earrings and big sunglasses, you just look like an accessories mess," she said.

Peters had Storm try on a pair of purple Gucci sunglasses — "I'm having a purple moment!" Storm declared. When going for a trendy pair of sunglasses, Peters said, "You're going to pay money for the trend, remember that. So you have to be willing to spend the money" to make the statement.

For instance, another hot color of the moment for sunglasses is white. "It started on the runways," Peters explained. "Everything was white. Designers were showing 40 pieces of white clothing. It made its way into accessories. Now it's here (as) sunglasses. Celebrities are going nuts for this. Almost everybody you see on the beach, everybody celebrity, has a pair of white sunglasses on."

However, Peters warned, "They're very retro. They're not going to look great on everybody."

Also on the cutting edge are Lucite glasses. "The good thing about Lucite," Peters said, "is that it is trendy, but these are very wearable. The best thing about Lucite is that it goes with everything. It doesn't matter what you're wearing."

And if you're interested in investing in a pair of classic sunglasses, consider aviators. "They're cool and chic," Peters said.
