(CBS/AP) LAUREL, Md. - Howard County police say a man wanted in the shooting of an officer is in custody after a 17-hour manhunt, according to CBS DC.

Police say 29-year-old Stephon Prather surrendered to police officers who spotted him walking along Route 1 in Laurel on Thursday morning. He was wanted on attempted murder and assault charges after the shooting Wednesday and police say he had a gunshot wound to the leg.

After receiving a call from a local business owner of a man with a gun, police say three officers confronted a man, who started firing. Police say 30-year-old Officer Steven Houk was hit and officers returned fire, but the man fled and officers searched the area overnight.

CBS DC reports police didn't find a weapon when they arrested Prather.

Police say Houk is in serious condition at Shock Trauma in Baltimore, but is talking and alert.
