Spain: Bodies In Garcia Lorca Grave To Be Exhumed

A Spanish official says bodies from a Civil War-era grave believed to hold the remains of the poet Federico Garcia Lorca will be disinterred in two to three weeks.

The exhumation from the unmarked common grave will be the most high-profile step yet in Spain's drive to address atrocities committed during that conflict.

Garcia Lorca was Spain's most renowned 20th-century poet. He is believed to have been executed by militia loyal to Gen. Francisco Franco in the early days of the 1936-39 war.

Francisco Espinola, a spokesman for the Justice Ministry in Andalusia, said Monday the exhumation will be in a matter of weeks.

Garcia Lorca's relatives are opposed. The plan will go ahead because relatives of others interred with him want proper burials.
