Son of missing Connecticut couple indicted on gun charges

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The son of a missing Connecticut couple has been indicted on federal gun charges after police found firearms in his home while investigating his parents' unsolved disappearance.

According to the indictment, Kyle Navin, 27, is "an unlawful user of and addicted to heroin" and thus his alleged possession of two firearms was illegal.

Navin's parents, Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin, have been missing since early August. On August 9, their car was found in a commuter lot off the Merrit Parkway in Westport, Conn., with a window reportedly smashed.

According to Kyle Navin's September 4 arrest warrant, he was the last person to speak with or see his parents and has made conflicting statements about his whereabouts on the last day they were seen, August 4. Navin also exchanged suspicious text messages with his father on that day.

Jeffrey Navin allegedly texted his son, "I'm not going home till I know mom is okay" and "Did you hurt mom?" to which the younger Navin replied, "No absolutely not. Why would you think"

Jeffrey Navin allegedly texted back, "I go home and get framed for murder" and "I'm going to the police first." Later, according to the complaint, the elder Navin texted his son, "UR setting me up."

On August 12, police investigating the couple's disappearance searched Kyle Navin's home, where they allegedly found two guns and more than 200 rounds of ammunition. They searched the home again on August 19 and allegedly found "items indicative of substance abuse, including numerous heroin brand-stamped glassine baggies with heroin residue, hypodermic needles, empty prescription bottles for oxycodone and prescription bottles containing other controlled substances."

According to the U.S. Attorney prosecuting the case, Navin has been detained since his September 8 arrest.

The firearms charges against him carry a possible maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Police are still investigating his parents' disappearance.
