(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Trial has begun for the son of former Bermuda leader Ewart Brown, who faces dozens of sexual assault charges stemming from his medical practice.

A Los Angeles County prosecutor says 40-year-old Kevin Antario Brown sexually assaulted 11 of his patients, and an undercover vice officer, using the guise of performing breast and pelvic checkups that were, in fact, unnecessary.

Brown has pleaded not guilty to 33 felony sex counts and could face life in prison if convicted on all of them.

Some of the alleged victims say Brown gave them breast or vaginal exams for complaints such as ankle injuries or the flu, according to CBS station KCBS. One woman claims Brown raped her.

Brown was charged in 2008.

Defense attorney Edi Faal says none of the women alerted any of Brown's staff to what was allegedly occurring.

The accused is the son of Ewart Brown, who stepped down as Bermuda's premier last year.
