The race for Democratic caucus vice chair is over -- before it began. Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) has declined to take the position of U.S. Trade Representative, his spokeswoman, Fabiola Rodriguez-Ciampoli, confirms to The Crypt.

Becerra broke the news to the Spanish-language outlet La Opinion, saying that he was concerned that trade would not be a top priority for the Obama administration.

“Mi preocupación es qué tanto peso hubiera tenido esta posición y llegué a la conclusión de que no sería prioridad número uno, quizá ni siquiera dos o tres," Becerra said.
