Sneak Peek at the Next iPhone: Apple's Lost Prototype is Found, Dissected

Everyone who loves the iPhone knows that June is the time of year when Apple rolls out its new model. And usually, they do a formidable job of keeping the annual improvements under tight wrap right up to the moment it's unveiled on stage. Not this year: Recently, Apple misplaced one of its prototypes, and it has found its way to the blogs. Want to know what the new iPhone will look like? No problem, because it's no longer much of a secret.

Gizmodo has been playing with the iPhone prototype for an entire week, and they've finally revealed what they've learned. In a nutshell, here's what's new in this year's iPhone:

  • A front-facing video chat camera
  • An improved back-camera
  • Camera flash
  • A Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
  • An improved, higher resolution display.
  • A second microphone, apparently for noise cancellation
  • Split buttons for volume
  • The power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic
In addition, here's a summary of the most obvious changes:
  • The back is entirely flat, made of a non-mettalic material for better wireless transmission
  • An aluminum border which wraps completely around the frame
  • Slightly smaller (but higher resolution) screen
  • 16% larger battery
