Small plane crashes on, shuts down LIRR tracks

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. - A small plane has crashed on a Long Island roadway, halting service on one branch of the nation's busiest commuter railways.

CBS New York reports at least one person has been killed in the crash. A second, reported to be 54 years old, was injured in an unknown condition. Identifying information of the victim and the survivor have not yet been released.

Police say the plane came down unexpectedly just before 8 a.m. Sunday in Hicksville. Photos from the scene show the wreckage on the rails just off the road and at a railway crossing.

It was not immediately clear how many people were on board or the extent of any injuries.

The Long Island Rail Road said service was suspended in both directions in the area due to police activity.
