Skins Sign Safety Toby Wright

The Washington Redskins bolstered their interior secondary on Monday,
signing five-year veteran strong safety Toby Wright.

Personnel director Vinny Cerrato confirmed the signing.

Wright, 28, was a second-round choice of the Rams in the 1994 draft and
played in 58 games for the team before he was released this summer for
salary cap reasons.

At one point in his career, Wright was regarded as one
of the best young strong safeties in the NFL, but a series of injuries
slowed his development.

In the past two seasons, injuries limited Wright 14 games, including just
three appearances in 1998. He has seven career interceptions but is a hard
hitter in the running game. The former Nebraska star had worked out for
several teams since his release.

To make room for Wright on the roster, the Redskins waived third-year
safety Jamel Williams.
