(CBS/AP) PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a victim of credit card fraud.

Arizona's Arpaio - the self-styled "toughest sheriff in America" - says someone used his Discover card to buy $291 worth of items at a Chicago grocery store called Jewel last weekend, CBS affiliate KPHO reports.

Arpaio says he hasn't been to Chicago since 1957 and that Discover Card representatives alerted him to the possible fraudulent activity.

It's unclear how the thief or thieves obtained his card number.

"I'm sure I didn't make the purchase so it could've been done by, what do you call it, skimmers making copies, or through the internet, many different ways," Arpaio told KPHO. "I don't think I'm the only victim around, there's many, many more I presume."

KPHO reports that Arpaio says if he finds out the people responsible were struggling, he may not press charges.
