Sex Offender Assaulted 2-Year-Old Shopping with Family, Say Calif. Police

UNION CITY, Calif. (CBS/AP) A registered sex offender has been arrested on suspicion of raping a 2-year-old girl in a Northern California discount store, while her family was shopping in the next aisle.

Union City police say 36-year-old Eugene Ramos snatched the girl Wednesday afternoon in a Dollar Tree Store and sexually assaulted her, all within a span of about 30 seconds while her grandmother and aunt were Christmas shopping in the next aisle.

The grandmother allegedly spotted Ramos assaulting the girl and began chasing him.

Police Capt. Brian Foley says two bystanders then tackled Ramos, subduing him until an officer arrived.

Ramos was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Calif. on suspicion of kidnapping, rape, sexual acts with a child and false imprisonment.

The toddler was treated for minor injuries at Children's Hospital in Oakland.
