There are 34 Senate races in 1998, with 18 seats held by Republicans and 16 seats held by Democrats are up for grabs. The Republicans, who now hold a 55-45 edge in the upper chamber, are expected to retain control. Either party could pick up a seat or two in November, but no dramatic shift in the balance of power is anticipated. Eight races are now regarded as toss ups, with six of those seats held by Democrats. California and New York are expected to provide exciting, big-state Senate battles. | Gov. Fob James has strong support from the religious right in a state that has become increasingly Republican. But many regard him as an extremist whose actions have embarrassed Alabama from time to time. His opponent, Lt. Gov. Don Siegelman, is popular and well financed. The most recent poll in the Dixie Bugel showed the race to be a dead heat. |
