Senate Moves Ahead With Immigration

The Senate just voted, 64 to 35, to renew consideration of a comprehensive measure to overhaul the nation's immigration laws. Sixty votes were needed to proceed.

The bill had collapsed on the Senate floor several weeks ago. But new efforts by proponents, including President Bush, revived it, though its passage is still in doubt.

"Well, we're back in the game, so that's good," declared Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff as he headed to a Senate elevator after the vote.
