Security guard plays cop with the wrong person, strobe lights backfire
(CBS/WGCL) DALTON, Ga. - A security guard who decided to play cop for the day, pulled over the wrong car - a real cop.
James Dale Smith, a security officer with J.J.K Security in Chattanooga attempted to pull over an undercover detective from the Dalton Police Department Tuesday, CBS affiliate WGCL reported.
During questioning, Smith told investigators he felt the detective was driving faster than he should, so he pulled up behind him and turned on a strobe light in his car, the station reported.
The detective slowed down and Smith pulled up by the driver's side of the detective's car and started to come closer to the vehicle in an attempt to force him to pull over, reports the station.
Police say Smith - the make-believe cop - then recognized the detective, and turned off his strobe light, according to WGCL's report.
The detective said Smith was wearing clothing similar to what police officers wear as their training uniform, and he was driving a Crown Victoria with a "Police Interceptor" icon. The car had strobe lights mounted along with police-style radio antennas, reported the station.
Smith faces charges of impersonating a law enforcement officer and also impersonating a public officer or employee.
