Second Cup Cafe: Karmina

Karmina, Latin for song, is the name of a new duo of sibling singer-songwriters.

They visited The Early Show's "Second Cup Cafe" Saturday to perform music from their debut album, "Backwards Into Beauty."

Kelly Rudisill, 23, was born in Germany and her sister, Kamille, 21, was born in Hawaii. They moved with their family to San Francisco, where they began their studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music at the ages of eight and ten, respectively.

They took classes in music theory, composition, and classical voice training - skills they draw upon when writing material for their band.

"If you know how to do all of that, then you have the foundation to do virtually anything in music," Kelly points out in Karmina's official biography.

After eight years in San Francisco, the sisters moved to Los Angeles, where they attended the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, earning their Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Industry. Kelly went on to receive a Master's degree in Music Education, as well as a teaching credential.

"We always wanted to be the best at what we do," Kamille says. "But we wanted to know what we were doing. This wasn't a hobby for us, we weren't dilettantes, so we made a point to learn everything we could."

At the end of 2006, Karmina signed with CBS Records. There, they composed music for several CBS TV shows, including "NCIS" and "Cane," as well as The CW's "Life Is Wild."

They also performed in the CBS special "A Home For The Holidays" in December 2007.

"Backwards Into Beauty" is set for release Tuesday. The first single from the album, "The Kiss," can be viewed on Karmina's Web site, Karmina.com.
