Schumer, Gillibrand join campaign supporting same-sex marriage

New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer joined a growing list of prominent New Yorkers to speak out in favor of marriage equality on Thursday, both appearing in a series of advertisements supporting same-sex marriage coordinated by the Human Rights Campaign.

"Hi, I am Kirsten Gillibrand, senator from New York and I am proud as a New Yorker to support full marriage equality," says Gillibrand in her 30-second spot for HRC's "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality" campaign.  "Every generation in America has stood up against the injustice of their day. This is our moment. This is our fight. We must stand up against inequalities and fight for justice for all."

"Some say politicians have a hard time getting to the point," says Schumer, in a separate ad. "But I don't. So I won't mince words. All New Yorkers should have the freedom to marry the one they love."

The senators, both Democrats, were vocal advocates of repealing the military policy "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" last year, and their renewed support for gay marriage comes just weeks after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo personally vowed to devote his "full attention" to legalizing same-sex marriage. (A bill legalizing gay marriage was defeated in the GOP-controlled New York state Senate in 2009.)

The ad series has so far hosted a long list of high-profile participants, including New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg; the actress Julianne Moore; Barbara Bush, the daughter of former President George W. Bush; Rev. Al Sharpton; former Mayors Ed Koch and David Dinkins, and actress Mira Sorvino.
