REP. BOB INGLIS

· In 1992, Republican Rep. Bob Inglis won a seat in the House at age 33. During the campaign, he refused to accept PAC money and promised to serve only three terms. He defeated Democratic incumbent Liz Patterson, whose father was Governor and a U.S. Senator, with a classic door-to-door campaign and assistance from the Christian Coalition 50%-48%.

· Keeping his promise of not getting too comfortable in Washington, Inglis sleeps in his office on an air mattress the nights he is working in the Capitol. The American Conservative Union gave Inglis a perfect 100 rating.

· Despite Christian Coalition support, Inglis has been criticized by some in the conservative wing of the Republican Party for not always supporting local projects. He crusades against what he calls pork-laden spending, including funds for the Southern Connector (stretch of road between I-85 and I-385).

· Understanding the clout African Americans hold in his state, he has campaigned on traditionally-black college campuses. He refuses to subscribe to Nixon-era Southern Strategy which sought to portray the Democrats as overly beholden to the African American community.

· Inglis supported Gov. BeasleyÂ's effort to move the Confederate Flag from the state Capitol dome to another spot on the Capitol grounds.

· Inglis opposes federally funded abortions and supports the death penalty. He co-sponsored the Church Arson Prevention Act.

· In Congress, Ingis sits on the Budget Committee where he focuses on keeping the budget balanced and maintaining a stable economy. He also serves on the following committees: Judiciary: Commercial & Administrative Law; Constitution.

· Without the benefit of PAC money, Inglis invested campaign contributions in short term transactions to raise funds. Over 14-months, he netted $147,000.

· South CarolinaÂ's fourth district is the countryÂ's number-1 textile-producing region. It is a hub for big foreign companies, including Michelin's North American headquarters and BMW's only American plant.
