Saul Bellow's "Letters" To Be Released In Upcoming Book
NEW YORK (CBS) The late Canadian-born American writer Saul Bellow is the subject of a new book entitled "Leters."
The Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author was an avid letter writer, and editor Benjamin Taylor has compiled into a book some of Bellow's most revealing and captivating letters written over eight decades to friends, lovers, wives, colleagues and fans.
Famous for writing some of the best novels of the 20th century, including "Mr. Sammler's Planet," Bellow also wrote lots of letters including some to fellow writers William Faulkner, John Cheever, Philip Roth, Martin Amis, Ralph Ellison, Cynthia Ozick, and Wright Morris.
According to Publishers Weekly, Bellow wrote a letter to Alfred Kazen saying, "I know my own sins well enough. They distress me, and I struggle with them. You may not believe this but I can, oddly enough, bear to be corrected. Unfortunately, I found nothing very helpful in your letter. Nor does your huffiness at the Century Club contribute much to the improvement of my character or the progress of the species."
The book is being published through Viking and will be released on Nov. 8.
