Saudi Suspect Under Scrutiny

Investigation into the bomb blasts at American embassies in Africa Friday has turned intense scrutiny on a Saudi ex-patriate well-known to government officials.

CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports that the No. 1 suspect is Osama Bin Ladin, son of a Saudi billionaire who uses his money to support terrorist attacks against the United States.

The Associated Press is reporting that an Arabic-speaking man has been arrested in Nairobi in connection with the bombing, but CBS News has been unable to confirm that.

U.S. intelligence agencies are operating only on informed speculation, and their speculation increasingly has focused on Ladin, Martin reports.

He is suspected in some of the bombings of U.S. installations in Saudi Arabia, Martin says, and is known to have been active in east Africa.

Ladin has the capability to mount simultaneous attacks like these in Africa and has the motive, because he has sworn vengeance on Americans. He is a logical suspect, Martin reports, because he is trying to drive Americans out of that whole region of the world.

Martin stressed that there is no hard evidence that Ladin is involved, and several other groups, including Cairo-based Egyptian Islamic Jihad, have the capability to put together a relatively sophisticated attack like the African embassy blasts.
