Ruby Zavala Update: Texas girl, 14, abducted by man who was "obsessed" with her, police say
(CBS/AP) MT. PLEASANT, Texas - Police say the suspect who abducted 14-year-old Ruby Zavala at knifepoint outside an East Texas church Sunday was obsessed with the girl.
Ruby was reported missing Sunday afternoon after a man, identified as 23-year-old Jesus Ramirez, allegedly kidnapped the teen, her sister and her mother outside Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant, about 100 miles east of Dallas.
The mother and sister were later freed, but authorities say Ramirez remains at large with 14-year-old Ruby and an Amber Alert has been issued.
A vehicle allegedly used in the abduction was found wrecked near Mount Pleasant.
NBC affiliate KXAS reports Ruby and Ramirez knew each other and dated in the past, but Police Chief Wayne Isbell says investigators don't believe the girl went willingly with Ramirez.
According to the NBC affiliate, Isbell says Ramirez has previously been charged with sexual assault of a child and there is reason to believe he is mentally unstable and suicidal.
Ruby was last seen wearing a white top, blue jeans and tan shoes. She is described as being 5 feet tall, 120 lbs., and has black hair and brown eyes.
Jesus Ramirez is described as Hispanic, 5'9", 165 lbs., with brown eyes and black hair. He was reportedly wearing a black baseball cap.
Anyone with information about Zavala's whereabouts is asked to call 903-575-4004.
